Sport 4 Life UK received the EL Sport Award 2018

The European Lotteries Sport Award was launched in 2016 as an initiative to reward organisations that seek to promote grassroots sport, making this society a better place using sport as a tool, for example supporting social inclusion through sport projects or tackling radicalisation through sport.

The first EL Sport Award, along with a check for 5000 euro to invest in their activities, was handed last 8 June 2017, during the EL Congress in Krakow, for the project Sports United by the sports club ESV Neuaubing (Germany). In occasion of the upcoming new edition EL contacted Olaf Butterbrod, from ESV Neuaubing, who confirmed a year later that the prize money was very, very helpful: “The players and the entire management of the club are still very grateful for the generous support of European Lotteries. We not only used the prize money for memberships of players and equipment (like footballs, sportswear, football shoes etc.). We were able to sign in a third team. This refugee/integration-team started in autumn 2017 and ended on second place in the table”.

Pleased by the very positive experience, EL decided to launch the call for proposal for the 
second edition of the Sport Award in early October 2017. Olli Sarakoski, President & CEO of Veikkaus Oy and Chairman of the EL Sport Working Group lead a dedicated Selection Committee to evaluate the over 30 projects that were submitted this year, doubling the numbers of the first edition. The evaluation process focused on three main criteria: completeness and overall quality of the application; the impact on society and its actual outreach; and finally, the inspirational value.

In front of an audience of more than 300 people from all over Europe and the representatives of more than 60 lotteries, Olli Sarakoski had the pleasure to announce that among the several high-quality projects, the winner of the 2018 EL Sport award is Sport 4 Life UK, a sport for employment charity which supports disadvantaged young people back into work through sports themed personal development programme.

Jack Skinner Business Development Manager at Sport 4 Life UK, together with his colleague Matthew Forsyth, had then the chance to present their projects to the audience. Sport 4 Life UK believe in a level playing field where every young person has the opportunity to create a better future for themselves. The organisation works to create better futures for unemployed and socially excluded young people (aged 12-29) by improving their employability and key life skills, through its sports-themed personal development programmes. Founded in 2006, Sport 4 Life started with 2 staff and 4 trustees delivering sports coaching sessions in the deprived ward of Ladywood in inner-city Birmingham. The aim was to provide disadvantaged young people who were involved in gangs and criminal activity opportunities to participate in sport, distracting them away from antisocial behavior. Through successes with various grants including the Football Foundation, Sport 4 Life was able to expand its delivery to 8-18 year old in other deprived areas within Birmingham. Income and therefore provision increased year on year and Sport 4 Life strategically changed its focus in 2011 – it was no longer ‘sports for sports sake’ but ‘sport for good’. They are now working with over 900 young people each year who are living in the top 10% most deprived wards in the UK, through our two core programmes: a proactive strategic intervention (TEENS) and a reactive support element (NEETS).  Jack Skinner then thanked EL “We’re delighted to have received this prestigious award – It recognises Sport 4 Life as a leading ‘sport for development’ organisation across Europe and the tangible impact we’re making in tackling youth unemployment in Birmingham through sport.” A last comment from Arjan van ‘T Veer, Secretary General of The European Lotteries closed the ceremony:“I am pleased to congratulate Jack and Matthew for their presentation and above all for the great work they have done till today. Sport 4 Life’s initiatives and commitment are inspiring, it is a pleasure for EL to support their current and future projects with the 5000 euro financial contribution represented by the award they were handed today. I really hope this will help them achieving even greater results for next year.

Devant un public constitué de plus de 300 personnes en provenance de toute l’Europe et de représentants de plus de 60 opérateurs de loteries, Olli Sarakoski a eu le plaisir d’annoncer que, parmi les nombreux projets de grande qualité, le gagnant du prix sportif 2018 de l’EL est Sport 4 Life UK, une association caritative qui aide les jeunes défavorisés à retrouver du travail grâce à un programme de développement personnel axé sur le sport.

Sport 4 Life UK est partisan d’une égalité des chances faisant que chaque jeune ait la possibilité de se créer un avenir meilleur. L’organisation s’efforce de créer un meilleur avenir pour les jeunes (âgés de 12 à 29 ans) sans emploi et exclus de la société, en améliorant leur employabilité et leurs compétences essentielles grâce à des programmes de développement personnel axés sur le sport. Fondé en 2006, Sport 4 Life a démarré avec 2 employés et 4 administrateurs, et en animant des sessions d’entraînement sportif dans le quartier défavorisé de Ladywood, dans le centre-ville de Birmingham. L’objectif consistait à fournir aux jeunes défavorisés qui font partie de gangs et se livrent à des activités criminelles des possibilités de faire du sport, de les distraire afin qu’ils abandonnent leurs comportements antisociaux.

Frente a una audiencia de más de 300 personas de toda Europa y representantes de más de 60 entidades de loterías, Olli Sarakoski tuvo el placer de anunciar que entre varios proyectos de la más alta calidad, el ganador del premio EL Sport Award 2018 fue Sport 4 Life UK, una organización benéfica de deporte para empleo que ayuda a jóvenes discapacitados a reincorporarse al mundo laboral a través de un programa de desarrollo personal con temas deportivos.

En Sport 4 Life UK creen en la creación de un marco de igualdad donde todos los jóvenes tengan la oportunidad de crear un mejor futuro para sí mismos. La organización trabaja para crear un futuro mejor para jóvenes (12-29 años de edad) sin empleo y que sufren exclusión social, mejorando su capacidad de inserción laboral y sus destrezas para la vida, todo ello a través de programas de desarrollo personal con motivos deportivos. Fundada en 2006, Sport 4 Life comenzó con dos empleados y cuatro administradores, impartiendo sesiones de coaching en el ala para desfavorecidos de Ladywood, en el casco urbano de Birmingham. La intención era proporcionar a los jóvenes desfavorecidos que estaban involucrados en bandas y actividades criminales la oportunidad de participar en actividades deportivas, alejándoles así de sus actividades antisociales.

Vor einem Publikum von mehr als 300 Personen aus ganz Europa und Vertretern von mehr als 60 Lotterien verkündete Olli Sarakoski, dass Sport 4 Life UK unter zahlreichen hochwertigen Projekten zum Sieger des EL-Sportpreises 2018 gekürt wurde. Sport 4 Life UK hilft jungen unterprivilegierten Personen mithilfe eines sportorientierten persönlichen Entwicklungsprogramms, wieder im Berufsleben Fuß zu fassen.

Sport 4 Life UK setzt sich für Chancengleichheit für alle jungen Menschen ein, damit jeder die Möglichkeit auf eine bessere Zukunft hat. Die Organisation verhilft Arbeitslosen und sozial ausgegrenzten jungen Menschen (von 12 bis 29 Jahren) zu einer besseren Zukunft, indem sie ihnen mithilfe eines sportorientierten persönlichen Entwicklungsprogramms beim Ausbau ihrer Qualifikationen und wichtigen Alltagskompetenzen hilft. Sport 4 Life UK wurde 2006 mit zwei Mitarbeitern und vier Trustees gegründet, die im unterprivilegierten Bezirk Ladywood in der Innenstadt von Birmingham Sport-Coaching anboten. Sozial benachteiligten jungen Menschen, die teilweise Gang-Mitglieder waren und kriminellen Machenschaften nachgingen, sollte die Gelegenheit gegeben werden, sich sportlich zu betätigen, und eine Alternative zu antisozialen Verhaltensweise geboten werden.
