Dear Members, Dear Partners, Dear Friends
— These first months of the New Year have already brought a lot of exciting news and successful stories for our Association. As you may have heard, last 24 February 2017 the new digital version of our EL Magazine won the prize for ‘Highly Commended’ Publication of the year by the judging panel of the European Association Awards 2017 in Brussels. It is an important achievement, not only for the visibility it granted to our Association but as well for the recognition of excellence and exceptional achievements by trade and professional associations.
This prize was great news but the main event I am happy to announce in this edition of our magazine is that EL appointed Arjan van ’t Veer as its new Secretary General, effective 1 March 2017. Arjan is the former Director of Corporate Affairs at Nederlandse Loterij, the company that resulted from the merger between De Lotto and Nederlandse Staatsloterij. On top of his unmatched experience in our sector, he has known our Association and its members for many years and is already familiar with our team and our renewed strategy. For all these reasons, I am confident that Arjan will be the key driver to reach our targets and to support our sector in challenging times.
Among the important highlights of this first quarter of 2017 I would certainly start with our lobbying and advocacy actions at EU level. On 14 February I attended the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where EL hosted a particularly successful event, a lunch-debate with several Members of the European Parliament to raise their awareness about the importance of the upcoming vote on the revision of the Audio-Visual Media Services Directive (next 25 April). After months spent monitoring this dossier and meeting with the key players in the various EU Institutions, the event gave significant visibility to our Association and showed that we are an active and trustworthy stakeholder and point of reference for the legal gambling sector at EU level. Another remarkable success was for sure our Marketing Seminar hosted in London jointly with WLA at the beginning of February. With the highest attendance ever registered, the seminar brought together top-tier speakers from all over the world, to address the theme of “3 B’s of Lottery Marketing” – Big Data, Big Jackpots and Big Communities, confirming this yearly appointment as a key event for all professionals in the lottery sector.
I am confident that with our new Secretary General on board, 2017 will bring EL many more great achievements and an even brighter future. In the coming months we will have several important events, among which is the Innovation Seminar in Milan (26-28 April), a great opportunity for all our members to share and learn about the latest trends and evolutions that our companies will face in the next years; and above all the EL Congress in Krakow (5-8 June) which is the most relevant industry event for our Association and its Members, and where I am looking forward to visiting with as many of you as possible, and sharing the new EL strategy and the ambitious results we intend to achieve with you at our General Assembly.
