Dear Members, Dear Partners, Dear Friends,
As the year comes to an end, we reflect on lots of great moments for EL and a year of political change at European level.
With a new European Parliament elected in July and a new European Commission taking office on 1 December, EL is busy identifying key policymakers of interest to our work and any initiatives – legislative and non-legislative alike – which might have an impact on the gambling sector and address them as necessary. According to the Commission President’s Political Guidelines, of most interest will be the Commission’s work on the new Digital Services Act and Artificial Intelligence.
With this in mind, I hope you enjoy reading the final edition of the year of the EL Magazine which features EL’s new advocacy brochure for European policymakers, developed in close collaboration with the Public Affairs Coordination working group. This brochure will allow EL and its members to call on policymakers to sustain the current widespread and successful model of national lotteries in Europe, safeguard the benefits of national lotteries for society and support national gambling policies through the principle of subsidiarity. Over the coming months and years EL will continue to monitor and actively participate in relevant policy developments to defend the EL lottery model.
While there were changes at political level this year, EL continued it work on several other important dossiers – as liaison association to the CEN Standardisation initiative, the study on Blockchain developments as presented in Antwerp in May, and held its first-ever Executive Module of our EL Corporate University and EL Seminar on Instant Games.
On sport, in this magazine edition you will be able to read an interview with the GLMS team highlighting the ongoing collaboration and dedication with EL and in particular, the successful ratification of the Macolin Convention in September. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the best to GLMS Deputy Secretary General Vagelis Alexandrakis who will take on a new and exciting position at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in January. I am sure our paths will cross again in the future!
Looking ahead to next year, EL will continue to advocate the interests of EL members, as a key statutory task of the Association. I am pleased to say that preparations are well underway for the EL 2020 Industry Days in Manchester and we will host several thematic seminars as a fantastic opportunity to network and share best practices with other lottery professionals.
On behalf of the EL Executive Committee and EL team, I wish you a joyful holiday season and a happy and healthy 2020!
