Loteria Romania appoints new General Manager

Since April Alexandru-Mircea Croitoru holds the post of General Manager at C.N. "Loteria Romana" S.A. The Romanian Lottery is one of the oldest institutions in the country, established in 1906 in order to improve the health system, especially in rural areas. Currently, most of its profits are dividends to the state budget, from where national public interest objectives are financed.

Alexandru-Mircea Croitoru, General Manager at C.N. “Loteria Romana” S.A.

Setting the scene

With a background in Business Criminal Law, Mr. Croitoru has over 10 years’ experience at “Loteria Romana” SA – from spokesperson and TV shows moderator, to marketing and sales Director. Before being appointed General Manager, he was the Counsellor of the General Manager for Development, Marketing, Sales and Communication. His extensive experience provides him with in-depth knowledge of the lottery phenomenon, his team and activities in general. This all adds up to a vision of a young man who has proven throughout his career, to have a lot of tenacity and enthusiasm, especially in terms of innovation and brand image consolidation.

2019 marks the 113th anniversary since it was founded. Society has changed over time and undergone many visible transformations on all levels, including mentalities, habits and needs. The Lottery has ensured its continuity in the market, by adapting to changes, in line with players’ expectations. What has not changed and continues to define the Lottery today is its important role financing projects of public interest, targeting different areas of interest.

Mr. Croitoru is honoured to be in his new role and is deeply attached to the values of the Romanian Lottery. He will continue to work on the implementation of projects that will drive the development of the lottery. Its own lottery system, SILOR, launched last year is one example of this development.

The processes of optimising, upgrading and refurbishing the activities of the Lottery remain priorities, both on the exclusivity part that the lottery has, and on the areas where there is open competition. The Strategy is to offer stability and predictability to its players, registered in lotto games and other gambling games organised by the Lottery.

Upcoming priorities

The Romanian Lottery is a state-owned entity under the authority of the most important ministry – the Ministry of Public Finance in Romanian. Currently, the top priority is the development of an alternative channel of sales for the products – an online system. By implementing such a system, the lottery will meet the expectations and needs of an important part of dynamic gamblers who prefer mobile solutions without being constrained by the program of its points of sale.

In parallel, the Lottery will continue to expand its sales network by concluding new partnerships with major retailers operating on the Romanian market and focus on the diversification of its products such as scratch tickets. Promoting responsible gaming, adapting the players’ needs and ensuring high standards of security and integrity are key to building and maintaining the credibility of the lottery brand.

All the development projects that are being considered aim to channel consumers into an expanded portfolio of licensed/responsible games which will then also contribute to the state budget.

EL membership

Being an EL member is a plus for the Romanian Lottery. The values promoted by this lottery are in full compliance with the principles of EL: organising responsible games for the benefit of the community, with respect to the legal and regulatory framework specific to this area of activity.

Participating in the EL workshops represents a good opportunity for a unitary approach to the challenges and problems specific to national lotteries. At the same time, they are a framework that favours the exchange of good practices, and the identification of new trends and solutions for a dynamic market, with a public whose requirements and expectations are in constant change.

On a personal level, Mr. Croitoru admits that one of the greatest satisfactions in over 10 years at the Romanian Lottery remains meeting the big winners, who show such joy on their faces and emotions are running high on both sides. According to him, this is one of the strongest motivations for every employee at the Lottery!
