Industry Days 2018 – Navigating Towards Digital Opportunity

The European Lotteries Industry Days 2018 in the beautiful city of Prague from June 4-6 were a huge success, drawing in over 60 lotteries from all Europe. Entitled “Navigating towards Digital Opportunity”, a total of 323 delegates registered for the 2018 Industry Days – which was a record to date for the European Lotteries.

Masters of ceremony Jutta Buyse (deputy EL Secretary-General) and Arjan van’t Veer (EL Secretary General) were lively hosts throughout the two-day meeting, keeping delegates well informed of the agenda, aptly introducing speakers and answering questions from participants.

Premium Partners IGT, Scientific Games, PlayTech, Novomatic Lottery Solutions, Intralot and Semi-Premium Partner Kambi each presented during the Industry Days on harnessing the opportunities presented by digitising the lottery and gaming industries. And there were clear commonalities in expressing the opportunities as well as challenges. As stated by EL President Hansjörg Höltkemeier in his opening address: “all these exciting digital opportunities will affect and change the lives of our players and as well our organisations”.

PlayTech, SGI highlighted the competitive environment of the entertainment industry, all competing for consumer’s attention. IGT, NLS emphasised the importance of new technologies such as blockchain, cloud computing and AI and the benefits they can bring to lottery solutions globally. Intralot and Kambi underlined how education is key to ensure betting is fair and that there is no one size fits all approach – although examples of how to grasp digital opportunities can be taken from other sectors.

Hosts Sazka did an absolutely superb job at making all delegates feel incredibly welcome in Prague. Guests were given a goodie bag containing cocktail invitations, informational leaflets and a USB stick complete with the full results of Kantar’s research. As well as hosting the two-day conference at the Marriott Hotel in central Prague, Sazka put on a fabulous Gala Dinner at the Municipal House, an art nouveau jewel of the city. Participants thoroughly enjoyed not only the delicious local cuisine, but also breathtaking tonic artistic performances and an unforgettable full philharmonic orchestral performance. Many thanks to Sazka for hosting a memorable 2018 EL Industry Days! We very much look forward to the 2019 Industry Congress to be hosted by the National Lottery of Belgium, in Antwerp.
