IGT | Sustainability Strengthens the Social Contract

As a leading lottery supplier, IGT recognises the vital importance of preserving society’s trust. By ensuring that sustainable and responsible practices are woven into the fabric of our daily operations, we continuously reaffirm our social contract to operate, building a stronger future not only for our business, but for our customers, their players, and the industry.

IGT recently released its 12th annual IGT Sustainability Report, “Ahead of the Game,” an externally audited document that validates IGT’s sustainability activities and data. The report highlights how we support our industry, our communities, our employees, and our suppliers, and shows how IGT’s sustainability strategy relies on recognising all our stakeholders’ interests, as well as communicating openly through ongoing dialogue, managing direct and indirect effects on all stakeholders, acknowledging and minimising any potentially negative impact, and adopting transparent and accountable practices.

IGT strives to enrich the communities where the Company operates. In 2018, IGT Finland employees ran in the Enterprise Marathon in Helsinki. Proceeds from the event supported Lasten Liike, a program that helps promote physical activity for elementary school children.

IGT’s goal is to provide value for all our stakeholders, including creating solutions that help our customers protect their players. The report documents how IGT is the only vendor with three distinct industry certifications for its commitment to Responsible Gaming. The Company strengthened its commitment in 2018 with recertification by the World Lottery Association (WLA) for its Corporate Social Responsibility Standards and Certification Framework. In addition, it was the first gaming supplier to achieve accreditation from the Global Gambling Guidance Group (G4) for both its digital and gaming segments. The Company also succeeded with its Internet Responsible Gambling Compliance Assessment Program (iCAP) recertification.

“We didn’t wait to be required by a regulator or asked by our customers to prove our commitment to responsible gaming,” said Wendy Montgomery, IGT Senior Vice President of Global Brand, Marketing, and Communications. “Over a decade ago, IGT began proactively incorporating responsible gaming programs into our business practices and programs, providing sophisticated solutions that customers can tailor further for their specific needs, and we continue to earn multiple industry accreditations for our ongoing leadership in this area.”

To build on its sustainability objectives, IGT joined the United Nations Global Compact network, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, aligning its strategies and operations with 10 universal principles related to human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. We also recently took steps to support the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs and their specific targets refer to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect the planet.

Of the UN’s 17 SDGs, IGT has identified nine that the Company can influence, and in 2018, it carried out a series of initiatives as part of our long-term plan, including:

  • Investing in our Industry, Customers, and Communities: IGT’s Instant Ticket Services headquarters in Lakeland, Florida, expanded its building by 45,000 square feet (approximately 4,180 square meters) and added a new flexographic printing press – an outstanding investment in the lottery industry, IGT’s customers, and the local community. Employment at the facility has grown to 112 percent since its opening in 2009, and the expansion is expected to boost full-time employment at the plant in the coming years.
  • Supporting a Fair and Inclusive Culture: IGT appointed a Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion to lead the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and implement its Global Strategic Plan. We also launched the first expanding network of employee-led Diversity and Inclusion Groups that help to attract, retain, and develop fellow colleagues, foster inclusion, and drive business innovation.
  • Empowering Communities: Community engagement is built into IGT’s culture and supported by employee-directed giving programs. These programs include “Global Giving Week – A Day for Doing,” launched in 2018 to encourage employees to use a paid day off to volunteer in their local communities. Employees around the world took part in the first year, volunteering over 4,100 hours to registered charities and non-profits.
  • Giving Children a Digital Advantage: The After School Advantage (ASA) program is IGT’s flagship community initiative, providing non-profit community agencies and public schools with 300 digital learning centres in the past 20 years to help at-risk children gain critical, competitive skills. In 2018, IGT launched a plan to refresh the program with a greater focus on learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, in step with the UN’s Sustainable Development goals.
  • Saving Energy Around the World: IGT offices and facilities worldwide created initiatives at the local level to reduce the company’s environmental impact. From Amsterdam and Beijing to Billings, Montana, new site-specific projects target electricity and gas consumption, lighting, ventilation, and eco-friendly behaviours. The energy savings from these programs is equivalent to the amount needed to charge nearly 182 million smartphones.

Among the United Nation’s 17 Sustainability Goals, IGT has identified nine that the Company is influencing through its sustainability efforts.

The 2018 report notes that IGT is now able to gather, monitor, and store quantitative and qualitative environmental data for almost every office in the enterprise for compliance purposes and sustainability matters. IGT has also increased data comparability and accuracy to easily see year-over-year differences, which helps increase process efficiency.

The ambitious goals and results highlighted in the 2018 Sustainability Report were made possible by IGT employees’ dedication to fostering a safe, diverse, and inclusive workplace aligned with IGT’s business strategy and its five core values: Passionate, Pioneering, Responsible, Authentic, and Collaborative.
