How technology is raising the bar in sportsbook integrity

Semi-Premium Partner Kambi bridged the topics of sportsbook integrity and technology in their panel discussion entitled “Changing the Game”.

10,000 football matches per week!

Sports betting, Kambi’s main service provisions, certainly has its differences as compared to traditional lottery businesses. However, many of the challenges and opportunities remain the same. Match-fixing is one challenge that Kambi do not take lightly. Finnish national betting agency Veikkaus, managed by the Finnish Ministry of Education, have established many bodies to prevent match-fixing domestically. Veikkaus have even established their own observer network and actively monitor sports betting. When first venturing into sports betting, in 1993, Veikkaus covered roughly 80 football matches per week. Nowadays, the company covers over 10,000 football matches simultaneously to track illegal betting patterns and prevent match-fixing. To assess risk levels every match, the company has its own risk management system. From a commercial point of view, Veikkaus considers amongst the most important principle of sports betting to have the opening odds as perfect as possible.

Education is key

Laura da Silva Gomes, Director at Silverfish & Ethisport, updated participants that there are some companies who invest in awareness of match-fixing, and some who do not. Taking the example of Francaise des Jeux, she said that they have worked at club levels to educate on match-fixing prevention from a young age. Ms da Silva Gomes also urged gaming businesses to be as proactive and sustainable as they can – “if a business doesn’t want to prevent overregulation”.

No one size fits all solution

Joni Hovi, Executive Director at Kambi, said that his company block around 40 match-fixing incidents daily. He explained that these bets are safer to retract in order to protect the customer. He agreed with Silverfish, stating that education is the key to prevention. Regulators and law enforcement must also be well trained to understand the basics of sports betting/sports integrity. In terms of prevention, “what works in one country doesn’t necessarily work in another one”. He was also unsure that corruption or doping could be altogether eliminated. Giancarlo Sergi, Global Lottery Monitoring System also emphasised the importance of treating problems locally and working with members. Naturally, the more information that is shared between members, the better.
