EL/WLA Sports Betting Seminar 2016: “The Sunny Side of Sports Betting”
This year again the seminar addressed a wide range of interesting topics. The speakers included experienced lottery experts but also high level keynote presenters, who all provided valuable insights and made this seminar a highly learning experience for all participants. The seminar was excellently moderated by Danske Spil Sports Betting Manager and Member of the EL Sport Working Group, Jens Nielsen.
Welcome addresses and Keynote Speakers
The seminar was opened by the President of EL, Hansjörg Höltkemeier, the President of WLA Jean-Luc Moner-Banet and Thierry Pujol from the hosting Lottery, FDJ, who all welcomed the participants to Nice and commemorated Jean Jorgensen who traditionally used to moderate this seminar in the past.
Chairman of EU Expert Group Match-Fixing and former Director of WADA, Harri Syvasalmi, spoke about the challenges modern sport is confronted with and underlined the added value the GLMS can provide regarding the on-going global fight against match-fixing. Former WLA President and current President of the Finnish NOC, Risto Nieminen, also delivered a lively presentation about the intimate relation between Lotteries and Sport.
Main topics addressed and discussed
As always, the Seminar included highly relevant presentations on issues related to market updates, bookmakers’ data, marketing and mobile technologies in sports betting. As we are in an Olympic year, there was also a focus on sports betting related to mega sporting events. E-sports has become a very hot topic, and participants had the chance to listen to the perspective of Lotteries already offering eSports betting, the perspective of the suppliers, and also engage in a lively discussion about ethical issues regarding eSports. The traditional Partners’ debate this year focused on the interesting topic of digital solutions in retail. Following the interesting input by the Partners, certain Lotteries also had the chance to present their apps and solutions for retail as well. Sports Integrity is always a focus for the sports betting seminar, and this year participants had the chance to listen to a great realm of relevant matters, including education and prevention, protection of players, the work of GLMS, etc.
Participants also had the chance to network and exchange views and experiences during the welcome dinner, which was graciously hosted by FDJ, as well as during the lunch and coffee-breaks. Participants also had the chance to attend the match of the 1st Round of Euro 2016 Sweden vs Belgium.
