EL Sponsors Participation in the Belfius Brussels Half Marathon – EL Running Team

As participation in sport and physical activity in Europe is stagnating, and even declining in some EU Member States, The European Lotteries (EL) decided to be an active and proud partner of the European Commission in the European Week of Sport.

The European Week of Sport is an important initiative launched in 2015 by Tibor Navracsics, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, which seeks to inspire European citizens to #BeActive on a regular basis and create opportunities in peoples’ everyday lives to exercise more.

The third edition of the European Week of Sport took place from 23-30 September 2017 and it was a week to remember: 32 countries, 34 000 events, 12 million participants. Europeans everywhere took on the #BeActive challenge and embraced opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity.

In line with this spirit, and in addition to several policy-oriented events happening in Brussels, EL decided to create its own running team to take part in the Belfius Brussels Half Marathon.

EL sponsored the registration fee for the runners in its team and provided them with the EL Running Team T-Shirt to wear the day of the event, showing again its commitment to an active and healthy lifestyle. More than 30 runners, including representatives from EU institutions and stakeholders joined the EL running team on 1 October and celebrated physical activity in a unique setting.

It was a long 21 km run but with  the right motivation and with such great company it was a pleasure, with a team-best result of 1h 36 minutes a record to improve upon in the coming years. EL will keep supporting the European Week of Sport and all similar initiatives, so put your running shoes on and start training for next year’s edition, the EL running team is waiting for you!
