Scientific Games’ Sports Platform a Powerful Competitor

If pure athleticism could describe a technology platform, Scientific Games is giving competitors in Europe a run for their money. In early 2018, Scientific Games acquired NYX Gaming Group (including OpenBet) to create the gaming industry’s broadest portfolio of content, technologies, digital products and services across sports betting, iLottery and iGaming. The company has just experienced two exciting victories with the launch of customized sports betting systems in Hungary and Switzerland for long-time lottery customers, and is ready for more.

Szerencsejáték Zrt.

First, Scientific Games won the implementation of an internet-based sports betting channel for Szerencsejáték Zrt., the largest gaming service provider in Hungary. Fully owned by the Hungarian State since 1991, Szerencsejáték Zrt. has the exclusive right to sell sport games (including one type of horseracing game) as well as instant and draw-based lottery games.

Following the introduction of Europe’s anti-money laundering regulations, Hungary’s new sports solution had to meet all of the new legislative requirements when it launched. Szerencsejáték Zrt. selected Scientific Games for the project based on speed-to-market for new technology, as well as easier, more cost-effective operations.

“Since migrating our online sports betting platform to a Scientific Games solution, we now have one company providing advanced gaming technology that supports our entire gaming portfolio,” says David Csillag, CIO for Szerencsejáték Zrt. “This creates a seamless gaming experience for our players, while offering us more efficient operations and lower maintenance costs.”

With the addition of the new internet sports betting platform, Scientific Games is now Szerencsejáték Zrt.’s sole provider of gaming systems technology and is responsible for the development, installation, and maintenance of the systems. The omni-channel platform allows Szerencsejáték Zrt. to deliver sports betting via mobile and internet, as well as through its distribution channel of nearly 5,000 retail lottery terminals.

“With this sports channel, we are now supporting their full game portfolio and proving that there are significant advantages to working with one technology provider to offer a multi-channel gaming environment for today’s players,” says Christian Kometer, Managing Director, International Lottery Systems for Scientific Games.

Player response to the new online channel has been positive, driven by the platform’s ease-of-use, reliability and overall sports entertainment experience.

Pat McHugh, Senior Vice President, Global Lottery Systems for Scientific Games, explains, “Our ability to seamlessly integrate end-to-end solutions for all products in Szerencsejáték Zrt.’s portfolio is core to the strategy of providing significant value to our lottery customers. Since migrating to Scientific Games’ latest platforms, Szerencsejáték Zrt. has successfully executed on their business plan, and has become one of the fastest growing lotteries in Europe achieving double digit growth year-over-year.”

Scientific Games, initially through a legacy company, has provided sports betting, gaming system technology, lottery retail terminals and instant games solutions to Szerencsejáték Zrt. since 1997.  In 2015, the company launched its AEGIS® open software system in Hungary.

Swisslos

In addition to the Szerencsejáték Zrt. sports technology project, Scientific Games recently launched a customized solution for Swisslos after winning a new contract in 2016 for the Lottery’s sports betting engine, including software enhancement, maintenance and support. It has provided a fixed odds sports betting system to Swisslos for about 15 years.

“We have been working on the attractiveness of our main sports product for quite some time, and have just completed the project with the launch of a new sports betting platform from Scientific Games,” says Dr. Roger Fasnacht, Director, Swisslos. “Now we can see if it’s possible to regain market share in the Swiss sports betting market.”

Since 1937, Swisslos has offered sports bets, lottery numbers games and instant games to players in the territory of German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, as well as in the Principality of Liechtenstein (on a contractual basis) since 1968. Among the Top 25 Lotteries in the World for total per capita sales (2016 La Fleur’s Almanac), Swisslos transfers its entire net profit to the member states of the Swiss Confederation. Liechtenstein’s proceeds support public causes.

Fasnacht says the challenge will be for Swisslos to regain customers lost to illegal internet providers and illegal sports betting shops in the back rooms of restaurants, clubs and bars.

“As Swisslos’ trusted technology partner, we are working very closely with their team to help the Lottery win back market share,” shares Kometer. “We believe that Swiss players will appreciate a highly secure online sports betting experience.”

Scientific Games has provided gaming systems technology, retailer terminals and instant games to Swisslos for more than two decades. Recently, the company was awarded a new contract to replace Swisslos’ current gaming system with its AEGIS technology in 2018-19.

The leading lottery systems technology provider in Europe and the fast-growing lottery systems provider in North America, Scientific Games supplies games, technology and services to more than 150 lotteries globally. The company is also the leading social slots provider and third largest publisher of social casino apps.

Scientific Games: Agile. Rapide. Puissante.
